Try this living fully present exercise when playing a game with your child. Enter into the imagination: the form the Lego blocks take or how the puzzle pieces feel in your hand and fit together. Become focused on your child. As other thoughts pop into your mind (and they will) simply return to the play.

Humans learn through play and fun, so have fun. Let the child set the pace of the play, let him or her change from toy to toy and add new characters or storylines. I am often amazed at how my daughter blends toys from different sets or characters. Don’t worry about packing up as you go, just for this time focus on play. Ask your child questions along the way. ‘What is the name of the horse?’ ‘Where does this one live?’ Make up stories, asking your child what happens next. Encourage and affirm all efforts. ‘You are trying really hard with this puzzle.’
